Work Hours: 07:50 – 16:50 Monday to Friday

Main Purpose

The Design Technology Teaching Assistant (TA) will play a vital role to helping maintain equipment as described below and to assist with the efficient use of materials in the classroom. To provide essential technical support to the Design & Technology department at ULC. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and high-quality running of practical lessons — including general workshop, woodshop, and advanced manufacturing facilities — by preparing equipment and materials, maintaining machinery, and managing workshop resources. The Design Technology TA is also responsible with helping to order materials needed for lessons within a timely manner with consideration for the yearly fiscal restrictions.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment & Workshop Preparation

1.Assist in preparing and set up tools, machines, and materials for practical lessons, including woodshop and metalwork areas.

2.Ensure all machinery (e.g., saws, sanders, drills, 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC routers, milling machines) is operational, clean, and safe before use.

3.Calibrate and adjust equipment as required for different projects.

Workshop Maintenance

1.Carry out routine maintenance, cleaning, and minor repairs on tools and machines.

2.Arrange for servicing and repairs with approved contractors when necessary.

3.Maintain ventilation, dust extraction, and safety systems.

Health & Safety Compliance

1.Conduct regular safety inspections of equipment, tools, and the workshop environment.

2.Ensure all PPE is available, maintained, and used correctly.

3.Assist in maintaining and updating risk assessments for workshop activities.

4.Support teachers and students in following safe working practices at all times.

Stock & Resource Management

1.Monitor and maintain stock levels of consumables, raw materials (wood, metals, plastics, composites), and spare parts.

2.Order materials and equipment in consultation with the Head of Department.

3.Receive, check, and store deliveries securely and safely.

Lesson Support

1.Assist during practical sessions by managing equipment use, setting up tools, and ensuring a safe working environment.

2.Prepare machines and materials between classes to keep lessons running smoothly.

3.Help manage schedules for high-demand equipment (e.g., CNC, milling machines, 3D printers).

Qualities & Skills

1.Technical Competence – Skilled in the safe operation and maintenance of a wide range of workshop tools and machinery, including woodshop equipment, CNC routers, milling machines, and 3D printers.

2.Health & Safety Expertise – Strong knowledge of regulations and best practices for manufacturing and workshop environments. Must pass a safety course upon acceptance of the position.

3.Organizational Skills -Ability to manage multiple tasks, maintain order, and prepare equipment efficiently.

4.Problem-Solving – Able to identify and fix technical issues quickly to minimize downtime.

5.Communication Skills – Clear and concise when explaining safe equipment use to staff and students.
