Established formally in June 2022, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (HKUST(GZ)) is a collaborative higher education institution between the Chinese mainland and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Approved by the Ministry of Education (MoE), it is the first legally independent educational institution co-founded by the Mainland and Hong Kong since the "Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area" and the "Overall Plan for Deepening Globally Oriented Comprehensive Co-operation amongst Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao in Nansha of Guangzhou" were announced and implemented. With a pioneering spirit of innovation, HKUST(GZ) is charting new territories in interdisciplinary education and exploring new frontiers in teaching methods, aiming to serve as a model of integrated educational development between the mainland and Hong Kong and become a world-renowned high-level university dedicated to nurturing future-oriented, high-level, and innovative talents.

Managed by the People’s Government of Guangdong Province under the law, HKUST(GZ) offers undergraduate and postgraduate education. Undergraduate admissions follow the nation's unified admission policy, with students receiving graduation certificates from HKUST(GZ) and bachelor's degree certificates and diplomas from both HKUST(GZ) and HKUST according to their graduation requirements. HKUST(GZ) also provides master’s and doctoral programs in accordance with relevant national policies and graduation requirements, issuing HKUST master’s and doctoral degree certificates.

To address the increasingly complex global and societal challenges, HKUST(GZ) adopts a novel interdisciplinary academic framework, replacing traditional schools and departments with "Hubs" and "Thrusts." This promotes interdisciplinary integration and fosters the development of emerging and frontier disciplines, marking a significant initiative in global higher education.

HKUST(GZ) comprises four Hubs: Function Hub, Information Hub, Systems Hub, and Society Hub, offering 15 postgraduate programs. The university will admit its first batch of undergraduate students in 2023, offering majors in artificial intelligence, data science and big data technology, and intelligent manufacturing engineering.

Located at Duxue Road, Qingsheng Hub Cluster, Nansha District, Guangzhou, the campus spans approximately 1,669 mu (111.3 hectares) and is divided into two construction phases. The first phase covers around 716 mu (47.7 hectares) with a total building area of approximately 636,000 square meters (63.6 hectares), operational since September 2022. The campus design integrates natural landscapes with architecture and incorporates advanced energy-saving and environmental protection technologies, aiming to create a new standard for green, smart, and sustainable development.
