UM-SJTU JI, established in 2006 under a joint venture between the University of Michigan and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, is a leading educational and research institution in China. It focuses on cultivating global innovators through its commitment to Internationalization, Interdisciplinarity, Innovation, and Quality (I3Q).

Over the past decade, UM-SJTU JI has been recognized with accolades such as the "Model of Chinese Higher Education Reform" by the Chinese State Council and the "Andrew Heiskell Award for Innovation in Higher Education" by the Institute for International Education, due to its unique engineering education approach.

Currently, the institution provides three undergraduate majors and eight graduate research disciplines. Its Mechanical Engineering and Electrical & Computer Engineering programs are accredited by the ABET. Students can pursue a dual-Bachelor's degree through the University of Michigan collaboration, earning two Bachelor's degrees in four years. UM-SJTU JI collaborates with 27 global institutions to offer extensive Global Degree Pathways (GDP) programs and international exchanges, preparing students for the complexities of the modern world by broadening their educational experiences.
