The American International School of Guangzhou (AISG) is an independent, co-educational day school providing a comprehensive educational program from preschool to grade 12. The school is organized into four divisions: preschool, elementary school (kindergarten to grade 5), middle school (grades 6 to 8), and high school (grades 9 to 12). The academic year spans 180 days, divided into two semesters, running from mid-August to early June.

Established in 1981, AISG is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and registered in the People's Republic of China as a school for foreign children. It is a member of several international educational organizations, including the Council of International Schools, the East Asia Regional Council of Schools, and the Association of China and Mongolia International Schools.

AISG is authorized by the International Baccalaureate (IB) to offer the Primary Years Program and the Diploma Program. The middle school follows an American curriculum, while the high school combines elements of both American and IB curricula. Graduates receive an American secondary school diploma and/or an IB diploma.

The student body encompasses around forty nationalities, with class sizes ranging from 17 to 20 students in the elementary and middle schools, and from 8 to 22 students in the high school. Mandarin as a second language is available at all grade levels, and additional language options start in grade 6.

The elementary school is situated on a purpose-built campus on Guangzhou’s Ersha Island in the Pearl River, featuring a gymnasium, computer lab, library, art room, music room, playground, and 50 classrooms, all with internet access. The middle and high schools are housed in a modern facility in the Science Park, northeast of the city center, which includes three art rooms, three music rooms, and numerous practice spaces, along with a fully wireless environment.

Extracurricular activities and community service are integral parts of AISG’s educational philosophy. Students engage in various sports, drama and music clubs, and Model United Nations groups, and participate in community service projects such as building homes for impoverished communities through Habitat for Humanity and supporting adults with mental challenges in Guangzhou. AISG takes pride in its student leadership in these areas.

The school is governed by a seven-member Board of Governors, comprising four elected by parents and guardians and three appointed by the American Consul General, other Consul Generals in Guangzhou, and the Corporate Council.
