In the 1980s, Marriott designed and established the Courtyard brand based on market trends and specific needs. The first Courtyard by Marriott opened in the United States in 1983. With the opening of the 2010 World Expo, Marriott International Group inaugurated its 800th Courtyard hotel in Shanghai, making Courtyard the 12th largest hotel brand across 28 countries and regions.
