The University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, "JI" hereafter), established in 2006 through a strategic partnership between the University of Michigan and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, has grown into a world-class educational and research institute in China. Over more than a decade, the institute has been committed to cultivating future innovators with a global perspective.
JI adheres to the four core principles of Internationalization, Interdisciplinarity, Innovation, and Quality (I3Q). This unique approach to engineering education has earned it significant recognition, such as the "Model of Chinese Higher Education Reform" award from the Chinese State Council and the "Andrew Heiskell Award for Innovation in Higher Education" from the Institute for International Education.
Currently, JI provides three undergraduate majors and eight research disciplines for graduate students. Its undergraduate programs in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical & Computer Engineering have attained ABET accreditation. Through a dual-Bachelor’s-degree program with the University of Michigan, students can obtain two degrees in different fields within four years. Additionally, JI collaborates with 27 top global institutions to offer various Global Degree Pathways (GDP) programs and international exchange opportunities, preparing students for an increasingly complex world.
All courses at JI are conducted in English by faculty recruited from leading universities around the world. Besides nurturing engineering students' intellectual curiosity and creativity, JI also aims to develop them into critical thinkers, strong communicators, and effective leaders.
