宁波数字孪生（东方理工）研究院（以下简称“研究院”）由宁波市人民政府批准，宁波市科学技术局与宁波东方理工大学（暂名）合作共建，为民办事业单位，于2023年1月3日注册成立，8月15日正式揭牌。研究院位于宁波市甬江科创区核心启动单元的镇海庄市，规划场地2万平方米，其中8000平方米用房已投入使用，是《宁波市超常规高质量发展数字经济行动纲要（2022—2026年）》中明确重点打造的三大数字经济科创平台之一。研究院院长由中科院院士、宁波东方理工大学（暂名）校长陈十一担任，执行院长由***人才、IEEE Fellow、宁波东方理工大学（暂名）副校长曾文军担任，科研团队由***人才、行业资深专家等知名学者领衔。
成立以来，研究院已启动3个研究中心、8个实验室建设，并与企业共建2个院企联合实验室；获批浙江省工程研究中心（共建）、浙江省博士后工作站等平台；科研设备原值达2400万元，其中高性能计算平台首期已投入1500万元。研究院已集聚各类人才60余人，其中博士学历达70%，硕士学历及以上超过90%，形成一支结构合理、素质优良的高层次人才队伍。研究院积极开展数字孪生前沿技术攻关，已与吉利汽车、旭升集团、中控集团、宁波舟山港、生态环境部华南环境科学研究所等20余家企事业单位开展合作，并引进孵化2家数字孪生高科技企业。
