United States Luggage has two distinct historical roots: The United States Trunk Co., founded in 1911 in Fall River, Massachusetts, and London Leather, founded in 1940 by John Ax in New York City.
John Ax, a skilled craftsman, arrived in New York City with his family, carrying only $100 and the clothes on their backs. He bought leather scraps from local tanneries and handmade wallets, key fobs, and other small leather goods to support his family. He named the company London Leather. In 1959, Larry Krulik joined his father-in-law and helped grow the company. In the early 1970s, London Leather shifted from manufacturing in New York City to designing and wholesaling wooden jewelry boxes made in the Far East.
The United States Trunk Co. gained a solid reputation in its early years as a manufacturer of trunks and duffels in Fall River, Massachusetts. With the rise of middle-class travel in the 1950s, the company shifted towards hand-carried luggage and changed its name to United States Luggage.
In 1970, Bernard Sadow, as Vice President of United States Luggage, invented the first piece of rolling luggage. After perfecting the design, he approached major retailers but faced numerous rejections until Macy's finally showcased the product. Despite securing a patent, it was later overturned, and many other manufacturers copied the idea.
In 1982, Larry Krulik acquired United States Luggage through a mutual friend. He focused on the more profitable line of leather business cases and eliminated the luggage portion of the business. By the late 1980s, United States Luggage became one of the largest leather attaché case companies in the U.S., known for affordable, high-quality attaché cases, patented designs, and the first color packaging in this category.
In 1987, Larry's son, Richard, joined the company. They worked together for eight years until Larry passed away after battling cancer. Richard then took over as CEO.
In 2000, United States Luggage acquired Briggs & Riley, an upscale luggage company founded in 1993 in Half Moon Bay, California. Krulik seized the opportunity to acquire the company when it became available.
These two brands grew steadily, and in 2008, the United States Luggage products were rebranded and reinvented as Solo, focusing on younger and more international consumers. Solo is now one of the largest brands in business cases and backpacks sold in various retail channels, while Briggs & Riley is the leader in luxury performance luggage sold globally.
The company's enduring success is rooted in its family values, professional organization, great teamwork, collaboration, career advancement, and respect for vendors, retailers, and consumers. United States Luggage has 135 employees with headquarters in Hauppauge, NY, and satellite offices in the UK and China.
