邓宏魁毕业于武汉大学，获美国加州大学洛杉矶分校分子遗传学系理学博士学位，现为北京大学生命科学学院教授、北京大学博雅讲席教授、清华-北大生命科学联合中心成员及北京大学干细胞研究中心主任。他曾于2010至2016年间担任国际干细胞生物学学会（ISSCR）理事会理事，并担任《Cell》及《Cell Stem Cell》等期刊的编委。他的研究团队长期致力于开发调控细胞命运的新方法，并建立全新的多潜能干细胞制备技术，至今已发表论文160余篇，引用次数超过16,000次，在小分子化合物诱导细胞命运转变方面取得了开创性成就。2019年，邓宏魁教授因其在人类干细胞基因编辑领域的贡献入选《自然》杂志年度十大科学人物。
通过多年的科学研究，邓宏魁教授实现了利用化学小分子组合将人体已分化的细胞重编程为化学诱导多能干细胞，并进一步将其定向诱导为各种功能细胞，进而开发针对多种适应症的创新干细胞和免疫细胞疗法，以满足当前未被满足的临床需求。化学重编程细胞命运，作为继“细胞核移植”和“转录因子诱导”之后的新一代技术，是由我国自主研发的人类多潜能干细胞制备技术，解决了干细胞和再生医学发展中的关键技术难题。
